More access to educational opportunities

Living in a rural village where access to water, electricity and markets are still all challenging aspects of life, access to the internet may seem unimportant. However, today, opportunities for higher education, study abroad and distance learning are only available online. In an effort to provide access to the very important educational opportunities that exist online, the Jifundishe Free Library has a computer lab that is open to the public, and provides instruction for how to access the internet. Additionally, Shule Direct, digitized versions of secondary curriculum is available for students who need access to books that may not be immediately available in the library. Our lab provides 25 laptops, introductory classes in their use, internet connection and free printing for university students conducting research. It is one of the only computer labs of it’s kind in Tanzania.

Access to the internet via phone is available in Tanzania but is very expensive for rural villagers. A few hours on the internet could cost as much as a local day’s wage. But like everywhere, most opportunity for business and education is facilitated on the web. The Sudler Lab provides training for local villagers to learn and understand the internet and ways that it can help them. Our E-Reader program for children, introduces electronic devices and how they can be used to access thousands of educational texts as well as storybooks that help develop a love of reading.
